The
Volcano Art Center (VAC) is a nonprofit,
tax-exempt, educational organization,
founded in 1974. Their mission is to
promote, develop, and perpetuate the
artistic and cultural heritage of
Hawaii's people and environment through
activities in the visual, literary, and
performing arts. They seek to share this
mission with a broad range of
individuals, groups, and communities who
share common interests and goals.
VAC is centered at Kilauea, home to
Pele, the fiery Hawaiian goddess of the
volcano. This dynamic, powerful
environment, where new land is being
formed every day, has inspired the
Hawaiian people and their crafts, songs,
dances, and legends for centuries.
Today, this area continues to draw
artists, performers, writers,
scientists, and educators.
Exhibits, demonstrations, and special
events take place at their Gallery,
featuring artwork by over 300 artists
inspired by this awesome locale. Housed
in the historic 1877 Volcano House Hotel
adjacent to the Hawai'i Volcanoes
National Park visitors center, the VAC
Gallery is operated under a cooperative
agreement with the National Park
Service.
VAC programs include the award-winning
Na Mea Hawai'i Hula Kahiko
performance series at the pa hula,
Hawaiian music and dance concerts, and
Hawaiian classes and workshops, such as
hula and Hawaiian language.
In addition, VAC presents a variety of
special events and performances all year
long; customized group programs focusing
on Hawaii's rich natural and cultural
heritages; and classes and workshops in
everything from fine arts and writing to
music and dance.
The construction of VAC's new
administrative offices at
Niaulani
was completed in spring of 2004.
Teaching and performance spaces will
expand the opportunities for developing
new programs, including an Education
Center, a glass and ceramic studio, and
visiting artist's residence, in years to
come.
