OVERVIEW |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The Pololu Valley Lookout is one of the most
remote spots on the Big Island, marking the
dead end of Hilo’s main highway. Although
close to the active district of North Kohala,
the area has hardly been developed as it
lies in a high-risk tsunami zone. As a
result, the valley remains as pristine today
as it was since the early days of the
island.
Several hiking trails lead from the base of
the valley to various lookout points. From
the higher lookouts, you can get great views
of the ocean and the cliffs before it, as
well as miles of native shrubbery covering
the slopes. On a good day, you can even spot
some rock formations and neighboring islands
across the water. Some of the trails are
steep, though, so beginners are advised to
join a hiking tour or go with a tour guide.
A small black sand beach can be seen a short
distance from the valley. This makes an
excellent rest stop after a long hike. The
water is calm most of the year, but check
out water conditions before getting
in-sometime there are strong currents that
can pull you away before you realize it.
The Pololu Valley Lookout can be reached via
Highway 270
