OVERVIEW |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Nature and history come together in this
265-acre beach park just a short drive from
the Kawaihae district. Lapakahi State
Historical Beach Park marks the starting
point of an ancient fishing community, Koaie,
which dates back to the 14th century. The
site features a wide array of historical
artifacts, natural wonders, and
archaeological remains, all of which stand
as mute testaments to the island’s
fascinating history.
The park runs along the Lapakahi Marine Life
Conservation District, where visitors are
treated to an educational tour and
storytelling session. The place highlights
the little-known bits of Hawaiian history,
such as the fishing culture of Old Hawaii.
If you’re bringing your kids along, have
them take part in the educational games or
go on a self-guided tour so they can learn
at their own pace.
The tour usually ends at the Koaie Cove,
home to a marine preserve and two small but
beautiful beaches. Beautiful coral reefs and
interesting wildlife make for excellent
underwater views, although snorkelers are
advised to keep a safe distance from the
coral. Sunbathing isn’t recommended as the
area has very little sand, but in the
winter, they make excellent spots for whale
watching.
Families can spend the rest of the day
exploring the park and camping out in the
picnic areas. There are barbecue pits placed
throughout the property, so bring your
supplies and have a cookout. On clear days,
try to get close to the water and spot the
island of Maui some 30 miles away.
