OVERVIEW |
|
| |
|
|
| |
This remote
and isolated area is recognized as the
birthplace of King Kamehameha the Great, the
"Lonely One". The high chieftess,
Kekuiapoiwa, gave birth to this great leader
in 1758. The King later went on to conquer
and unite all the Hawaiian Islands.
This historical site is not well marked and
is difficult to reach. It should be
protected and treated with extreme respect.
From the birth site are gorgeous views of
the Pacific Ocean to the west and rolling,
green hills to the east.
The thick walls surrounding the site are
made from thousands and thousands of
carefully placed stones. The red dirt, blue
ocean, gray rocks, and green grass makes for
a beautiful contrast in colors.
This historical site is maintained by local
Hawaiians and must be treated with respect
and dignity. The rock walls are very
delicate and can be unstable. Never walk on
the walls or move the rocks. |
