OVERVIEW |
|
| |
|
|
| |
This
12-acre zoo, nestled in the heart of the
Panaewa Forest Reserve south of Hilo, is the
only outdoor rainforest zoo in the United
States. Some 50 species of animals from
rainforests around the globe call Panaewa
home -- including several endangered
Hawaiian birds. All of them are exhibited in
a natural setting. This is one of the few
zoos where you can observe Sumatran tigers,
Brazilian tapirs, and the rare pygmy
hippopotamus, an endangered "minihippo"
found in Western Africa. |

DIRECTIONS |
|
| |
|
|
| |
The Zoo is
situated on the outskirts of Hilo at 800
Stainback Highway.
From Hilo, take Highway 11 (Hawaii Belt
Road) South towards Volcano. About two and
one half miles past Prince Kuhio Shopping
Plaza look for the "ZOO" sign on a lava rock
wall, just after "Kulani 19." Turn right on
Mamaki.
From Volcano look for "Kulani 19", just
beyond it is the sign for the Zoo, a small
brown one high above the ground on the right
hand side of the highway. Turn left at
Mamaki, follow signs to the Zoo, 1 mile off
the highway. |
