  OVERVIEW

Mauumae Beach is one of the Big Islands hidden gems. The beach is usually quiet during the week, and a great place for a picnic. A nice walking trail leads to Mauna Kea beach. Snorkeling is usually good.

  DIRECTIONS

Take highway 19 (Queen Kaahumanu Hwy) north out of Kona. Follow it north through Waikoloa Resort Area, past the Puako Road turnoff, and past the Hapuna Beach State Rec Area. After the overpass look on the left side of the road for the entrance into the Mauna Kea Resort. If you come to the 68 mile marker, you have missed it. Let the gate guard know you want to go to Mau'umae Beach. After entering the resort property, turn right on Kamahoi. Keep to the right. You will come to some big buildings on the right. It feels funny, but keep going straight, (don't turn into their parking lot behind the building). You will keep going straight and quickly drive over a wood planked bridge. Keep driving on the dirt road, over another bridge. Keep going a good ways further. When you start going down a little hill, with some parking on the right, and pole #22 on the left, you are there.

  PLEASE NOTE

While Hawaii's beaches can bring much enjoyment, it is always a good practice to use common sense while visiting them. Please be aware of the wave & wind conditions before going into the water. Mornings are usually best for swimming, snorkeling or diving. Have respect for the strength of the waves and be aware that high surf can come up at any time. NEVER turn your back to the ocean.

Be careful when exploring any rocky shorelines. Waves can crash on the rocks and knock you over easily, and the rocks may also be sharp when walking on them.

When snorkeling or scuba diving, please have respect for ocean life, and remember that the coral reef is alive too. Avoid standing on or touching if at all possible.
