Directions:
For the trail head at Honokohau
Small Boat Harbor, drive 1 mile
north of Kailua-Kona on Hwy. 19,
turn left on Kealakehe Parkway, and
turn right on the boat ramp access
road. Park in the big gravel lot
near the end of the road. You could
start this hike at the visitor
center, a half mile farther up Hwy.
19, but don't do that unless you
relish withering heat. The visitor
center parking lot is locked from 5
pm to 8 am. The harbor parking lot
is open round the clock, freeing you
to hike in the cooler parts of the
day. |

OVERVIEW |
|
| |
|
|
| |
This hike into Hawaii's prehistoric past
loops through the network of trails in
Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park.
Despite the harsh lava landscape, the area
supported thriving populations in the past,
thanks to the large fishponds here and the
sophisticated aquaculture practices of the
ancient Hawaiians. Hundreds of archeological
sites dot the area and the trail passes some
of them, including heiau, petroglyphs, and a
massive seawall......... |
