OVERVIEW |

|
|
| |
The 1.5-star Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay Hotel is
a budget hotel located on Hilo Bay with some
lovely ocean and bay views. The hotel is
Hawaiian-family owned and includes their
sister property in Kona, Uncle Billy's Kona
Bay Hotel. It is centrally located for those
who are visiting Volcanoes National Park for
hiking, exploring and hopefully catching a
sight of fresh lava pouring into the ocean.
There is a black sand beach nearby and the
historic small town of Hilo with its
renovated store front properties of
restaurants, shops and galleries is well
worth a visit.
Although the hotel is ocean front, there is
no beach for swimming, but there is a pool
with sun deck. Wander through the lovely
gardens, featuring small red bridges
throughout and beautiful tropical flowers
such as Ginger, Orchids, Heliconia and ferns
of all types. Property amenities include
complimentary limited parking, security,
laundry facilities, wireless internet access
(fee) and internet kiosk. There is also an
Uncle Billy's General Store, open daily from
6:30 am to 9:30 pm selling everything from
clothing. cigars and island gourmet food and
snacks to freshly brewed Kona coffee, wine
and local made ice cream.
Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay Hotel has an on-site
restaurant, Uncle Billy's Fish and
Steakhouse that serves breakfast and dinner
daily with a Sunday Brunch Buffet. Dinner
features island-influenced cuisine including
steak, seafood and chicken, with Hawaiian
music and a complimentary Hula Show.
performed nightly. Overlooking the gardens
is the Pineapple Lounge, a great place for a
tropical drink after a busy day sightseeing.
The hotel recently introduced a new Lite
Complimentary Continental Breakfast Buffet
to all guests. Included will be various
pastry and baked goods, along with juice and
premium fresh brewed coffee.
Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay Hotel is a budget
hotel and not for everyone. Many people like
this property because of the friendliness of
the staff and the laid back atmosphere and
don't care if everything is quite dated and
not particularly immaculate. The hotel is
popular with backpackers and hikers who are
there to explore the Volcanoes National
Park, enjoy the lush scenery on this side of
the Big Island with its waterfalls, rain
forests and black sand beaches. There is a
terrific Farmer's Market that takes place
every Wednesday and Saturday from dawn till
everything is gone. It features over 100
local farmers, is the largest Farmer's
Market in Hawaii and residents from other
islands have been known to fly over just to
shop there. For information on the status of
the Kilauea lava flow go to http://www.nps.gov/havo/ |
